The situation
A working environment had grown across virtualized services, Home Assistant, networking components, and supporting systems. Each part served a purpose, but the dependencies between them had become harder to see and the environment was increasingly difficult to maintain with confidence.
The real constraint
The task was not simply to move workloads. The migration had to preserve service continuity, respect the order in which systems depended on one another, and retain a practical path back if a change failed. Privacy and operational details have been generalized here.
Decisions that mattered
The work began with an inventory of services, dependencies, storage, network assumptions, and recovery requirements. Migration order was designed around those relationships rather than around whichever system was easiest to move first. Each service was validated in its new Proxmox environment before the old path was retired, and documentation was treated as part of the migration rather than an activity for later.
The improvement
The resulting environment is more coherent: responsibilities are easier to locate, recovery paths are clearer, and future changes can begin from an understandable system rather than inherited uncertainty.
